Japan reached a political consensus on reducing its dependence on nuclear power

Japan's Nuclear Power Plant Incident's Accidental Facts Hitomi Horibah said at a meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Monday that Japan has formed a political consensus on reducing its dependence on nuclear power, but it needs public discussion on how to proceed.

Earlier that day, about 60,000 people took to the streets of Tokyo and demanded the abolition of nuclear power so as not to repeat the Fukushima nuclear crisis.

Hosuo Hozu said: “In Japan, we have reached a consensus that we want to reduce our dependence on nuclear energy. However, what kind of speed and what kind of method to achieve this goal has not yet been determined.”

"It may take a full year to discuss with the broader public the energy policy that will be determined."

Japanese Prime Minister Noda Yoshihide once said it is difficult to build a new reactor. He also said that he would be happy to see the nuclear reactor shut down for safety inspections and restart in April next year to avoid damage to the Japanese economy.

In March of this year, strong earthquakes and tsunami hit Japan's Fukushima nuclear power plant, causing the most serious civil nuclear accident since the Chernobyl nuclear accident in 1986. Of the 54 nuclear reactors in Japan, only 11 are currently operating.
