Korea Introduces LED Industry Enhancement Policy

The Korean government has actively promoted energy-saving lighting and developed a series of policies to foster and strengthen the LED industry, which has accelerated the popularity of LED lighting in Korea. And proposed that in 2012, the market share of LED will be increased from 8.3% in 2008 to 15%.

South Korea will expand the use of LED lighting devices around the city. As of April 2010, 17% of the approximately 93,300 lighting fixtures in public facilities in Seoul, South Korea, have been replaced with LED lighting fixtures. It is planned that by 2020, all public lighting fixtures in Seoul will be replaced with LEDs.

In addition, the Korean Railways Department spent 1.38 billion won, and it is scheduled that by the end of 2010, 200 vehicles will be replaced with LEDs for energy saving, and the remaining 1,800 will be replaced in phases.

Due to price factors, the current popularity of Korean households is only 2%. To this end, the Korea Ministry of Knowledge Economy plans to provide subsidies for buyers of LED lighting for chicken farms, houses, and shopping malls, and provide funding for private large-scale buildings called "ESCO."

South Korea's government energy conservation and environmental protection agency has planned to invest more than 1 trillion won in chip development before 2012. It also plans to increase research and development investment in new areas of the LED lighting industry to ensure that South Korea has a global leading technology.

The South Korean government and enterprises have actively formulated policies, but there are still four problems in order to expand the LED industry. This is the guarantee of talent, materials, reliability, and the relationship between SMEs and large companies.
