Multi-party restricted 3D TVs cannot replace flat-panel TVs for the time being

The 3D TV market is still in its infancy. In 2010, domestic sales of 3D TVs were 100,000 units, and it is expected to reach 2 million units in 2011. Although sales of 3D TVs have increased rapidly, they still account for a relatively small proportion of the overall industry. In 3D technology, glasses-based 3D technology is currently the mainstream in the market, and active shutter technology led by Samsung is fiercely competing with polarized light technology led by LG. Due to the low price of polarized 3D TVs, its market share has steadily increased and gradually exceeded shutter-type technology. The naked-eye 3D technology is not yet mature, and it cannot be applied to household products on a large scale.

The conditions for replacing 3D TVs with existing products are incomplete. By comparing the history of LCD TVs in place of CRT TVs, we analyze whether 3D TVs can replace existing products in terms of visual experience, technology, and parties involved in the industry chain. We have found that in terms of visual experience, 3D TVs can display stereoscopic effects, but they are inferior to existing products in terms of clarity, brightness, and so on. At the same time, due to the immaturity of technology, 3D TVs still have problems such as flickering and ghosting. In terms of technology, 3D TVs are more in line with the features of the original product feature upgrades. There have been no major changes in display technology, TV accessories, and industrial chains. From the point of view of all parties participating in the industry chain, the promotion efforts of various manufacturers have increased and the prices of products have declined rapidly. However, it is generally believed that 3D TV technology is not yet mature. Overall, the conditions for replacing 3D TVs with existing products are incomplete.

3D TVs already have access to homes, but they cannot be quickly popularized. Ovid Consulting's survey shows that consumers are more receptive to 3D TVs and are looking forward to the development of 3D TV technology. At the same time, 3D TVs have begun to enter the consumer's home due to the drop in product prices. However, due to the current spectacle-based 3D technology can not bring users a good visual experience, while 3D film sources are scarce, which greatly hindered the 3D TV consumer demand.

We believe that 3D TV will not bring overall investment opportunities to the industry. At the same time, due to the similar technology and product prices of various manufacturers, it is too early to judge who will win. We propose to focus on the changes in two aspects: one is the breakthrough of 3D display technology, and the other is the increase of 3D source, and the development of 2D to 3D technology. If 3D TV can break through in the above two aspects, the development of 3D TV will accelerate.
