Palantir to Acquire Data Visualization Company Silk

On August 10, Pacific Time, according to foreign media reports, Salar al Khafaji, co-founder and CEO of big data visualization company Silk, announced in the official blog that Silk will be acquired by Palantir. The deal looks like a talent acquisition because Silk employees will directly join Palantir in their new role.

Founded in 2010, Silk provides cloud-based data visualization tools for journalists, activists, NGOs, and companies. Its target customers are not professional programmers. Silk provides relatively simple data visualization and analysis tools. Users can create an interactive graph with a few mouse clicks to make your data more vivid. Silk also supports multi-person visual collaboration.

The Palantir company has a total of two product lines - Palantir Gotham and Palantir Metropolis, respectively, applied to the field of national defense security and finance, aimed at large-scale enterprise customers. They financed with a valuation of $20 billion last year and became the third-highest technology startup in the United States, second only to Uber and Airbnb. However, in May of this year, Buzzfeed discovered that the 100 employees of Palantir had left the company and that several important customers did not renew their contracts, leaving them facing a crisis of confidence.

Silk's team mentioned that they are very happy to solve some "more ambitious and important data problems." That this acquisition does not mean that Palantir will adjust its target customer base.

In addition, Silk will continue to operate as a standalone platform after the acquisition, keeping its free features, but no one will maintain and upgrade the Silk platform. Khafaji stated in the statement: "Silk platform will operate according to the original situation, but we will no longer provide technical and customer service to Silk's users, nor will we perform any development work and add new features to this product."
