Automated design data management

The manufacturing department issues documents from the Document Control Center in order to establish production lines. Engineering technicians also need access to design files in order to change the design. In both cases, the file control manager acts as a central dispatcher and facilitator. The entire process has been manual, costly and slow. Production Data Management (PDM) software for PCB designers is becoming more and more available due to its easy access to the Web Center's configuration. Solutions that are very beneficial to the PCB design environment offer two valuable features: keeping the company's technical drawings and providing electronic access tools; design change automation , also known as the Engineering Change Order (ECO) workflow. A PDM solution for the design environment allows anyone with a web browser in the company to access the company's technical files for technical changes or information. Application management is extremely simple without the need to manually attach or upgrade software on each client PC.

Traditional way

Design change management is a difficult and time consuming task for company archive managers. The generation, implementation and approval of ECOs require resources from engineering and manufacturing departments. The paper tracking method begins this way: the ECO creator first completes a form requesting a change in the design file. The file control manager sends the form to the originally specified route after assigning the ECO tracking number. The design engineer will review the form and provide some suggestions for modifications, and note the documents and schematics... so much more paper is needed. Finally, the ever-expanding ECO request is sent to the Change Review Center for approval; the center is made up of many reviewers (Figure 1).

There are many potential difficulties in the above traditional change management process:

* Tracking: An ECO form and related files are usually manually tracked and recorded in the log.

* Serial processing: Because there is only one original ECO with an attachment, it cannot be used by many people at the same time. Moreover, the approval of the change review center cannot be carried out in parallel.

* Visibility: The purchasing department needs to know the status of the undecided change in time to avoid the purchase of the device due to the ECO being processed. The manual ECO system can inform the purchasing department that a particular component is being changed, but the specific details of the change will not be known until the ECO is completed.

* Notification: The people involved in the ECO may not know that they have something to do unless they have information in their inbox. So someone must be notified what they need to do and where they are in the ECO.

* Routing: ECO forms and related files must be moved step by step, and each step is executed serially.
