Yesterday afternoon, Microsoft held a press conference in Beijing to officially launch the fifth generation of Xiao Bing, marking a significant milestone in the development of its Emotional Intelligence (EQ) chatbot. Known as Microsoft's flagship EQ chatbot, Xiao Bing has now reached a state of completion in its fifth iteration.

At the event, Microsoft showcased the advanced capabilities of the fifth generation Xiao Bing, highlighting its high-level sensory integration. This allows the bot to autonomously choose which senses to utilize based on context, blending multiple primary senses to deliver a more holistic experience. The system combines full-duplex voice interaction with real-time streaming media visuals, creating a seamless conversational interface.
One notable feature demonstrated was Xiao Bing's ability to engage in natural, two-way conversations. The bot can independently interpret spoken input and generate coherent responses, thanks to its advanced Speech Recognition (SR) and Text-to-Speech (TTS) capabilities. According to Microsoft, starting September 6, Xiao Bing will offer AI-driven phone reservations, allowing it to proactively call individuals based on its understanding and even connect directly via traditional phone carriers outside of VoIP services.
Li Di, head of Microsoft Xiaobing, explained that the company has divided the evolution of AI interactive technologies into three distinct stages. The first stage focuses on basic AI interaction, where the bot utilizes one or more isolated interaction modes such as text, voice, images, or videos. The second stage introduces primary senses, unifying these interactions under a central engine like Xiao Bing’s EQ core dialogue engine. Xiao Bing transitioned to this phase beginning with its third generation in 2015. The fifth generation officially enters the third stage, characterized by advanced sensory capabilities.
Xiao Bing’s integration into the Internet of Things (IoT) marks another leap forward. Microsoft emphasizes that IoT should serve as a medium for AI rather than the other way around, positioning AI as a core functionality within IoT devices. Peng Shuang, director of Xiao Bing products, noted that successful IoT devices must either excel in IQ, offering users convenience and efficiency, or focus on EQ, fostering emotional bonds with users. Xiao Bing aligns with the latter approach, aiming to become a beloved part of families.
At the press conference, Microsoft announced that Xiao Bing has been integrated into the Xiaomi IoT open platform, enabling control over 35 smart devices on the Xiaomi Mijia platform. The product supports full-duplex voice interaction and is currently available on the Mijia platform. Additionally, Microsoft is collaborating with numerous IoT vendors to embed Xiao Bing into various devices. Partnerships with companies like Yeelight and Oriental Pearl have already borne fruit. Real-time streaming media senses have also been implemented in several cities and public areas across China and Japan.
In terms of creativity, Xiao Bing has ventured into several artistic domains, including poetry, children’s literature, songwriting, and news writing. Earlier this year, Xiao Bing released a book of AI-generated poetry titled *Sunshine Through the Glass Window*. Anyone can now use Xiao Bing to write their own poems.
In the realm of children’s audiobooks, Microsoft claims Xiao Bing surpasses 98% of human creators. Converting children’s books into audiobooks costs only 1/500th of what human creators charge and requires 1/80000th of the effort. Microsoft plans to mass-produce these audiobooks and bring them to market.
Regarding music, Xiao Bing’s latest training has improved its sampling rate to 48 kHz, expanding its vocal range significantly. A song titled “I Am Xiao Bing†has been released on the QQ Xiaobing channel. Additionally, Xiao Bing analyzes melodies and combines this with studies of iconic city landmarks to create visual works tied to the mood of cities and songs. This collaboration resulted in a line of clothing called “Wallline,†sold at SELECTED stores.
In journalism, Xiao Bing has been writing columns for outlets like the Qianjiang Evening News, leveraging big data to predict outcomes of major global events. Microsoft’s Smart Media Business Platform Solution 3.0 now includes six new modules: media productivity, media knowledge maps, intelligent interaction, and platform-wide interaction. Over the last year, Xiao Bing has expanded its reach from WeChat and Weibo to nearly 11 media platforms, including Look at News, Cover, and Spring City Evening News.

Shen Xiangyang, Microsoft’s global executive vice president, highlighted that IQ and EQ will define the future of AI. Xiao Bing’s ultimate EQ aims to ensure rationality rather than mere emotionality. Microsoft’s EQ research seeks to empower Xiao Bing to take initiative in conversations, with emotion serving as a facade.
Shen Xiangyang also mentioned that the Microsoft Bing International Edition now features Zo-Bing, which offers EQ-based searches. Integration between Xiao Bing and Bing is accelerating, utilizing Bing’s global big data capabilities to create media knowledge maps for comprehensive content analysis.
Xiao Bing’s evolution spans four generations:
**First Generation:** Launched in May 2014, Xiao Bing initially served as a chat participant in group chats, lacking one-on-one capabilities. Despite challenges like being blocked on WeChat, it established a foundation for emotional connectivity.
**Second Generation:** Released on June 25, 2014, Xiao Bing could interact one-on-one, improving user engagement. It supported multiple third-party platforms, showcasing skills like weather forecasting, encyclopedia queries, and reminders.
**Third Generation:** Launched on August 20, 2015, this version enhanced sensory systems and communication abilities. Xiao Bing achieved a 55% reliance on its own evolution through user interactions, compared to 100% in the first generation.
**Fourth Generation:** Introduced on August 5, 2016, it focused on emotional computing frameworks, adding real-time emotional dialogue engines and multilingual support.
