Scientists develop new airbags to make robots and humans coexist in safety

On September 27th, a team of researchers from the German Institute of Robotics and Machinery unveiled an innovative safety feature for robots: an airbag system designed to protect humans in shared workspaces. This technology activates when a robot detects potential danger, inflating rapidly to cushion any possible collision. As robots become more common in environments like warehouses and factories, ensuring human safety has become a top priority, especially as these machines can malfunction or act unpredictably. The new airbag is not just a simple safety measure—it's engineered to detect collisions in real time. If a person enters the robot’s workspace, the airbag automatically inflates, using compressed air to create a protective barrier around the robot’s moving parts. Two built-in pressure sensors ensure that the system functions correctly and reacts promptly to any potential impact. This design makes it ideal for both humanoid robots and robotic arms used in manufacturing, offering a versatile solution for different types of automation. The development was tested thoroughly, and the results showed that without this airbag, robots wouldn’t meet the safety standards required for collaborative work with humans—known as MRK (Mobile Robot Kinematics). The technology made its public debut in 2016 and quickly gained recognition, winning the KUKA 20,000 Innovation Award at the Hannover Fair in 2017.
