OLED industry: small size has taken off and looks forward to large and medium size start

On March 3, 2011, China's authoritative IC T research and management consulting agency CCID Consulting Co., Ltd. released the "2010-2011 China OLED Industry Development Research Annual Report" at the "2011 China Consumer Electronics Market Annual Meeting". The size OLED technology has matured and quickly entered the mobile phone market. The self-luminous, ultra-light, fast response, wide viewing angle, and low power consumption of the OLED make the mobile phone equipped with the OLED screen popular. OLED has initially established its position as the core of the third-generation display leadership. As technology matures and breakthroughs in large-scale production processes, OLED products will extend to larger sizes 28a.

Apple iphone has driven the popularity of large-size smartphones, and has also brought OLED screens into the market. Especially for active OLEDs (AMOLEDs), the main market drivers are mainly from high-end mobile phones and larger applications. The development of the city's AMOLEDs has continued to grow after shipments surpassed PMOLED for the first time in 2009. The market is growing with the advancement of technology and the continuous upgrading of application products. According to CCID Consulting's data, with the demand for mobile phones and MP3/MP4 applications, the OLED display market has grown rapidly since 2005. By 2010, China's OLED shipments reached 1.352 million, up 38.2% year-on-year. The increase in shipments comes from the increase in demand in the application market and on the other hand from the increase in manufacturers' production capacity.

Industrial development: China's OLED industry development has begun to take shape

At present, the manufacturers of OLED panels are mainly concentrated in the three regions of Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. With Samsung SDI launching the world's first AMOLED panel, and Sony and LG respectively launching 11-inch and 15-inch AMOLED TVs, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and other manufacturers are becoming more competitive in the OLED market, and also in AMOLED. Achieved a better competitive position. In addition, manufacturers including LG Display, Qijing, TMD and Samsung Electronics have also accelerated the development of AMOLED technology.

The development of the OLED industry has received a lot of attention from the Chinese government. With the support of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, breakthroughs have been made in OLED R&D in the Chinese mainland. In October 2008, Visionox, which was established by Tsinghua University, successfully built the first large-scale OLED production line in mainland China in Kunshan, realizing the mass production of small-size OLED displays.

As of the end of 2010, Kunshan Visionox, Shanwei Xinli, Sichuan Hongshi, Foshan Rainbow and other enterprises in mainland China are engaged in small-size OLED production. China's first AMOLED pilot line has been completed and put into operation in Kunshan and opened up all production processes at the end of 2010. Shanghai Tianma and Foshan Rainbow are building a 4.5-generation AMOLED production line, which is expected to be mass-produced in 2011. BOE and Sichuan Hongshi are also in production. Actively carry out research and development of AMOLED projects. The AMOLED industry in the Mainland is about to see the fruits of the bumper harvest.

Industry base: government support needs to be strengthened, and the industrial chain needs to be gradually improved.

Since OLED is a technology-intensive industry and a frontier technology in the information industry, it requires national departments to conduct overall planning for the OLED industry at a strategic level, pool resources, strengthen independent innovation, guide and encourage enterprises to join the OLED industry chain and provide financial support. To form the capacity for sustainable development.

In terms of government support, 2010 was mainly based on the “Electronic Information Industry Adjustment and Revitalization Plan” issued in 2009, and continued to work. For example, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's special fund for the electronic information industry and the Ministry of Finance and Industry Demonstration Base, the Ministry of Finance's tax policy on imported materials for new display device manufacturers. As a traditional province of China's electronic information industry, Guangdong Province has always attached importance to the development of the OLED industry. In January 2010, China's first ministry and province to build a OLED industry demonstration base settled in Foshan Shunde, which laid a solid foundation for Guangdong Province to continue to lead in the OLED industry.

But for the moment, although China has a certain OLED industry foundation, the industry chain is not yet ready. China does not have a complete set of OLED production equipment manufacturers for industrialization, and the key equipment and system technology of the whole set of equipment are in the hands of Japanese, Korean and European companies. Raw materials such as ITO glass, photoresist, desiccant, and UV curable adhesive for packaging also have similar problems to varying degrees. Due to the lagging development of China's TFT technology, the manufacturing technology of the panel is weak, and the production management experience is insufficient, so it is difficult to develop the production process of AMOLED.

In addition, China's capital market is not mature enough, and the channels for corporate financing are narrow. The role of the state in basic research, industry standards, and industry resource integration needs to be strengthened, while the lack of production, development and management talents in the OLED industry are the weaknesses of China's OLED industrialization.

At present, many companies around the world are engaged in the design and production of OLED driver ICs. OLED active drive panels are subject to high price, poor matching of silicon materials and organic materials, and become the bottleneck of the global OLED industry development. China can only introduce driver ICs from abroad; in terms of large-size and color-screen technologies, due to relatively backward equipment conditions and relatively lack of capital investment, there is a big gap between them and foreign development. The shortcomings in these links have restricted the development of China's OLED technology to a certain extent. In terms of patents, the basic patents for small-molecule OLED materials and structures are mainly in the hands of Kodak Company of the United States and Japan's Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd.; the basic patents for polymer PLED materials and structures are mainly in the UK CDT company and the US DuPont company. In terms of active drives, Japan's Sanyo, Sharp, SEL, Eldis, South Korea's Samsung, LG and Taiwan Institute of Technology have a certain amount of core patents.

In general, domestic OLEDs are still in their infancy, and almost all upstream material accessories such as driver ICs, conductive glass, packaged glass, organic materials, precision reticle, etc. need to be purchased from Japan, Korea, etc.; Although it has been able to meet large-scale production requirements, it has not been standardized. Equipment manufacturers' understanding of OLED production technology is far less than that of OLED operators with long-term R&D and pilot production experience.

Industry Outlook: OLEDs provide a good development opportunity for China's display industry

Since China did not enter in time for the early development of CRT and LCD, making it lack of core technology and competitiveness, China can only rely on low-cost labor and strong OEM to participate in the assembly and testing of lower profits in the industrial chain. The emergence of OLEDs provides a rare opportunity for China's display industry.

At the same time, China is a major producer of global consumer electronics products and the world's largest OLED application market, with more than 45% of IT products related to display devices; mobile phone production in mainland China accounts for more than 50% of global production; MP3 in Mainland China /MP4 production accounts for more than 90% of global production; while other consumer electronics products account for more than half of global production. With the further decline in the cost of OLED panels and the further increase in production capacity, the application level of other consumer electronic products will also increase in the future. For example, domestic brands have begun to produce products using OLED screens, such as Lenovo's use of AMOLED screens on its music phone, creating a precedent for domestic brands to test water OLEDs. Therefore, China has great potential to develop OLED industry and market development.

Based on the long-term research on the status quo and development of the OLED industry, CCID Consulting forecasts the development scale of China's OLED industry in 2009-2011. In the next three years, as the demand for consumer electronics terminals continues to increase, the demand for OLED panels is growing rapidly.
