Zoom Video Communications recently closed a $100 million D-round funding round, led by a consortium including Sequoia Capital. The company aims to use the investment to speed up the development of new features and enhance its platform. At a major user conference held today, Zoom shared some exciting updates and insights into its future direction.
The most impressive feature introduced at the event is the integration of augmented reality (AR). With this new capability, users can now join virtual 3D environments during meetings, without needing any special equipment. However, presenters will need to wear AR headsets to fully utilize the feature. It’s important to note that initially, the AR function will only be compatible with Meta devices, though Zoom has expressed plans to expand support to more platforms in the near future.
Augmented reality is just one of several cutting-edge features that Zoom is currently exploring. Eric Yuan, the company's executive director, mentioned that the team is also working on real-time conversation feedback tools to improve engagement and communication during meetings. These innovations reflect Zoom’s ongoing efforts to stay ahead in the fast-evolving video conferencing industry.
With competitors like Cisco WebEx constantly pushing forward, Zoom is clearly stepping up its game. WebEx, which Cisco acquired in 2007, has long been a strong rival. Interestingly, Eric Yuan was one of the co-founders of WebEx before launching Zoom.
