Researchers at University College London (UCL) have achieved a groundbreaking data transfer rate of 1.125 Tb/s, setting a new world record in digital information transmission. This milestone was reached through extensive research into the limitations of optical communication systems, with the goal of pushing the boundaries of what's possible for future network infrastructure. The team is working on developing next-generation core networks and communication systems that can handle massive amounts of data more efficiently than ever before.
Dr. Robert Maher, the lead researcher from UCL's School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, highlighted that current commercial optical systems can only manage around 100Gb/s per channel. In contrast, their lab setup can process over 1 Tb/s, making it about 50,000 times faster than the average UK broadband speed of 24 Mb/s. At this speed, users could download an entire 1080p season of *Game of Thrones* in just one second.
To achieve such high speeds, the team employed advanced coding techniques typically used in wireless communication. They built an optical system using 256QAM modulation—similar to what’s used in cable modems—and combined 15 different optical wavelengths into a single "super channel." This approach significantly boosts data capacity and paves the way for faster, more efficient internet services in the future.
The project not only demonstrates the potential of optical technology but also shows how innovations in signal processing and network design can revolutionize how we transmit and consume digital content. With these advancements, the next generation of networks could support ultra-fast downloads, real-time streaming, and even more complex applications like AI-driven services and immersive virtual environments.
