There are multiple ways to classify these models, but here we explore them from the perspective of I/O blocking versus non-blocking and whether they use single-threading or multi-threading. In terms of I/O, there are two main types: blocking and non-blocking. Blocking I/O causes the current thread to wait while performing read or write operations, whereas non-blocking I/O allows the thread to continue executing other tasks without waiting. Regarding threads, a single-threaded model means one thread handles all client connections, while a multi-threaded model uses multiple threads to manage client requests simultaneously. **Single-Threaded Blocking I/O Model** The single-threaded blocking I/O model is the simplest server model. Most developers start with this when learning network programming. It can only handle one client at a time. When a client sends a request, the server processes it in a single thread, blocking until the operation completes. For multiple clients, requests are handled sequentially, creating a queue-like system where each client must wait for the previous one to finish.
