On October 11, 2017, in the final week of the StarCraft AI competition, Facebook quietly entered the scene with a robot named “CherryPi,†which secured sixth place. The robot was developed by the artificial intelligence research team at Facebook's lab, which consists of eight researchers.
The growing competition in the AI space shows how seriously Facebook is taking its rivalry with companies like Google. Google’s DeepMind, based in London, made headlines last year after its AlphaGo AI defeated a world champion in Go. In August 2017, DeepMind turned its attention to StarCraft II, aiming to push the boundaries of AI in real-time strategy games.
Although Facebook participated in this competition using an older version of StarCraft, it still posed significant challenges for AI systems. The company has over 80 researchers working on AI projects, led by Yann LeCun, a professor at New York University. While Facebook has published numerous papers, it hasn’t achieved the same level of recognition as DeepMind. They released three research papers on星际 hegemony but didn't make any major announcements about their game-playing efforts.
The final results, announced on Sunday, showed that Facebook still has a long way to go—CherryPi placed sixth among 28 competitors, while the top three were all created by independent programmers.
Here are the top 8 rankings of the 2017 StarCraft AI Competition:
1. ZZZKBot – Developed by Chris Coxe, an Australian programmer
2. PurpleWave – Created by Dan Gant, a US software engineer
3. Iron – Developed by Igor Dimitrijevic, a French programmer
4. cpac – R&D team from the CAS Institute of Automation
5. Microwave – Developed by Micky Holdorf
6. CherryPi – Developed by Facebook AI Research Lab
7. McRave – Created by Christian McCrave
8. Arrakhammer – Stanford University AI Research Team
The StarCraft AI Contest is sponsored by the AIIDE Conference (AI for Interactive Digital Entertainment), one of the three major AI competitions in the StarCraft arena, alongside CIG and SSCAIT. The competition aims to promote and evaluate AI in real-time strategy games. A total of 28 teams participated, with 15 being independent teams. Most of the rest were affiliated with universities. Notably, DeepMind, the AI division of Google (maker of AlphaGo), did not take part in this contest. (Source: Internet consolidation)
