The circuit design here is inspired by National Semiconductor’s application. It starts with three voltage regulators, LM338 [IC1-2-3], connected in parallel. Each regulator can provide up to 5 amperes of current. The final output voltage ranges from +4.5V to 25V DC, which is stabilized. The regulation at the output is achieved using TR1. If continuous voltage regulation isn't required, the resistance value of trimmer TR1 can be measured and replaced with a fixed resistor proportional to the desired output voltage. The rectifier bridge BR1 should be mounted on a metal box to dissipate heat effectively. Conversely, IC1-2-3, which are in the TO-3 package, should be mounted on a large enough heatsink with mica insulation between them and the heatsink. There should be no direct contact between the components and the heatsink. Resistors R1-2-3 should be placed away from the PCB since they generate heat and could damage the board. Pay special attention to the thick cables carrying high currents, ensuring they have sufficient diameter, along with appropriately placed output connectors to avoid short circuits. In the second section of the diagram, there's a simpler circuit based on the LM350 voltage regulator, which can deliver an output voltage ranging from +1.25V to 25V DC with a maximum current of 3A. The IC5, being in the TO-3 package for better thermal conductivity, should also be mounted on a heatsink with mica insulation. The output is controlled via trimmer TR2. This circuit is powered by a power transformer larger than 450VA. The entire assembly should be housed in a suitably sized box that allows for adequate ventilation. A 12x12cm fan operating on 230Vac can aid in expelling excess heat. Voltmeters and Ammeters can be added to the outputs for monitoring purposes.
