Samsung launches eUFS flash memory for vehicles much faster than eMMC

Global Network Technology Report – According to recent reports from foreign media on September 26, Samsung Electronics is set to manufacture embedded Universal Flash Storage (eUFS) for next-generation vehicles.

The eUFS memory is specifically designed for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), dashboard systems, and in-vehicle infotainment solutions. It will be available in two storage capacities: 64GB and 128GB.

Since the start of 2015, eUFS has been gradually replacing eMMC in mobile devices. Initially, it was limited to high-end smartphones, but now even mid-range models are beginning to adopt eUFS instead of the older eMMC technology.

Samsung's new eUFS offers significantly improved data transfer speeds, with read speeds reaching up to 850 MB/s and random read performance of 45,000 IOPS. This makes it ideal for handling the complex data demands of modern vehicles.

The eUFS flash memory supports both the JEDEC UFS 2.1 standard and the upcoming UFS 3.0 specification. It also includes essential features like data refresh and temperature monitoring. Samsung emphasized that the temperature notification feature, managed through the controller, is crucial for ensuring reliable performance in automotive environments.

To strengthen its position in the automotive sector, Samsung established a dedicated automotive team in 2015. The company supplies components such as display screens, batteries, and memory chips to car manufacturers. In 2017, it acquired Harman International for $8 billion, further expanding its presence in the automotive audio market.

As the world’s largest memory chip supplier, Samsung leads in both NAND flash (including eUFS) and DRAM technologies. With this latest move into automotive-grade storage, the company continues to solidify its role in shaping the future of connected and autonomous vehicles.
