Samsung launches eUFS flash memory for vehicles much faster than eMMC

Global Network Technology Report — According to a recent report by foreign media on September 26, Samsung Electronics is set to manufacture embedded Universal Flash Storage (eUFS) for next-generation vehicles. This marks a significant step in the company's expansion into the automotive technology sector.

The eUFS flash memory is specifically designed for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), dashboard interfaces, and in-vehicle infotainment systems. It will be available in two storage capacities: 64GB and 128GB, catering to a range of automotive applications.

Since its introduction in 2015, eUFS has gradually replaced eMMC in mobile devices, initially limited to high-end smartphones. However, the technology is now making its way into mid-range devices as well, offering better performance and faster data access compared to older storage solutions.

Samsung’s new eUFS solution promises significantly improved data transfer speeds, with read speeds reaching up to 850 MB/s and random read IOPS of 45,000. These enhancements are crucial for supporting the growing demands of modern connected and autonomous vehicles.

The eUFS flash memory complies with both the JEDEC UFS 2.1 standard and the upcoming UFS 3.0 specification. It also includes essential features like data refresh and temperature notification, which are vital for maintaining performance in the challenging environment of a vehicle. Samsung emphasized that the temperature notification feature, managed through the controller, plays a key role in ensuring reliability and safety in automotive applications.

In 2015, Samsung established a dedicated automotive team to supply components such as displays, batteries, and memory chips to car manufacturers. The company further strengthened its position in the automotive space by acquiring Harman International for $8 billion, expanding its offerings to include premium in-car audio systems.

As the world’s largest supplier of memory chips, including NAND flash (such as eUFS) and DRAM, Samsung continues to solidify its leadership in the semiconductor industry. Its latest move into automotive-grade storage highlights its strategic focus on delivering cutting-edge technology for the future of mobility.
