Zhu Xi, the deputy director of the Department of Informatization and Software Services at China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, highlighted that China's Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem is gradually taking shape, with accelerated integration across vertical industries. The number of patent applications has been rising steadily, and significant progress has been made in the development of international standards.
These remarks were made during the 2017 China Internet of Things Conference, held in Fuzhou on the 9th, which focused on the theme “Intelligent ICT and Smart Society.†The event brought together industry leaders, researchers, and policymakers to discuss the future of IoT and its role in building a smarter society.
In June of this year, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology announced plans to promote the expansion of mobile IoT infrastructure, emphasizing wide coverage, high connectivity, and low power consumption. The goal is to enhance innovation within the IoT industry and drive the large-scale application of IoT technologies in areas such as public safety, healthcare, urban management, and social services.
According to Zhu Xi, early-stage pilot projects have already demonstrated the potential of IoT. The technology is now being integrated into sectors like retail, transportation, logistics, environmental protection, healthcare, security, and power. These applications are beginning to scale up, and the country has started to establish a spatial development pattern across four major regions: the Bohai Sea area, the Yangtze River Delta, the Pearl River Delta, and the central and western regions. In 2015, Fuzhou Economic and Technological Development Zone became the fourth national-level IoT park, leading the nation in the innovative use of Narrowband IoT technology.
The IoT industry in China is also evolving rapidly. The market size grew from 17 billion yuan in 2009 to over 930 billion yuan by 2016. Zhu Xi noted that China has developed a relatively complete industrial chain covering chips, sensors, terminal devices, application software, system integration, and communication networks. Over 100 million M2M terminals have been deployed on the world’s largest mobile communications network.
However, despite these achievements, the overall level of IoT application remains relatively low. There is still a gap in core chips, high-end sensors, and intelligent hardware compared to developed countries. Additionally, there are ongoing concerns regarding network and information security.
Looking ahead, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology will focus on strengthening key IoT technologies, accelerating the development of core standards, and promoting the internationalization of Chinese technologies. It will also aim to cultivate influential large enterprises while supporting the growth of specialized SMEs. Furthermore, the ministry will work on the top-level design for IoT security, establishing effective mechanisms for early warning, supervision, and service delivery, ultimately enhancing the country's information security capabilities.
