Sapphire price fell, the market returned to rational

High-tech LED : Since last year, the domestic MOCVD investment boom has been launched, but it has also led to the overcapacity of the chip. Does the butterfly effect caused by the excess of the chip have already affected the sapphire? How do you view the risk of excess output?

Liu Shiquan : MOCVD and large-size sapphire crystal growth furnaces are very different. First of all, large-size sapphire involves the advanced technology of aerospace, and countries such as Europe, America, Russia, Japan and South Korea have national security restrictions on the export of crystal growth furnaces. At present, a small amount of imported crystal growth furnaces in China are still used for foreign second-hand goods or decades of technology. Second, the government's subsidies for crystal growth furnaces are limited.

At present, the capacity of a 85 kg crystal growth furnace can drive 4-5 MOCVD downstream. With a total of 1000 MOCVD calculations in the country within 3 years, 300 crystal growth furnaces will be sufficient, so the future domestic crystal growth will be sufficient. The exit of the furnace will account for a certain proportion.

High-tech LED: Last year's 2-inch sapphire had a maximum price of $38 and a profit of 200%, attracting many investors. This year, the price of sapphire fell to $10, a drop of more than 70%. As a producer of crystal growth furnaces and sapphire, how do you view the ups and downs of sapphire prices?

Liu Shiquan : The current drop in sapphire prices is a rational return. Before 2009, the price of two-inch sapphire substrates on the market was less than $10 per piece. Since the second half of 2009, the market has been in a special period, and the price has soared to nearly 30 dollars. The temptation of high profits has led to the original production companies to expand their production.

But this year's LED lighting application is not as good as expected, sapphire prices have dropped rapidly, has fallen to 12-13 dollars. In fact, the price seems to have fallen by half, but it is still more expensive than the normal profit level. The true cost of a 2-inch substrate is about $5. With the maturity and progress of sapphire crystal technology, it is normal to reduce the price.

High-tech LED : The price of sapphire fell, which made some enterprises that originally wanted to expand production slow down. Has the crystal sapphire crystal growth furnace been affected in this respect?

Liu Shiquan : Indeed, the current domestic sapphire companies have plans to invest billions of dollars, but in fact there are not many landings, and most of the companies have not yet landed, but the price has dropped, and this impact is great.
Jing Lande is taking a steady move. At the end of this year, Jing Lande will launch an 85 kg long crystal furnace, and has received 120 orders so far.

High-tech LED : In contrast, TG action is relatively large, as of June this year, it received orders for 400 million US dollars of crystal growth furnace. Jing Lande is based on gradual progress. What is your company's recent planning?

Liu Shiquan: We do not expect explosive development, but the cycle is gradual, and the stalls will be too big. This year we have received 120 orders with a quota of several hundred million yuan. We only want to do these orders in 2012, do a turnkey project, and lay the foundation for the business of the next year. We hope that through the accumulation of this year and next, we will achieve 300 orders by 2013 and produce and sell 600-800 stoves in three years. Based on this, a larger sapphire growth furnace was introduced.


Mainly push 85 kg crystal growth furnace to achieve efficiency optimization
High-tech LED : Large-size sapphire substrate has become a market trend. The 4-inch and 6-inch chips are the development direction of MOCVD. Can the development of the crystal growth furnace adapt to the needs of large-size chips?

Liu Shiquan: The crystal growth furnace needs to be updated in time. Some foreign companies such as Rubicon have already launched a 6-inch substrate, but we believe that the short-term (within 3-5 years) will not become the mainstream of the market. Jinglande focused on the 85kg sapphire crystal growth furnace, considering that MOCVD will gradually shift to a 4-inch substrate, taking into account some 2-inch substrates and 6-inch substrates.

At present, the domestic 4-inch sapphire has not yet become the mainstream of the market, and the new model upgrade of MOCVD also needs a process. On the other hand, the increase in size also increases the technical difficulty, and the degree of warpage of the sapphire wafer increases due to the large area.

High-tech LED : In addition to the size, what is the difference between the domestic crystal growth furnace and foreign countries? Compared with GT SOLARE, what is the difference between domestic and foreign stoves?

Liu Shiquan: The key to the crystal growth furnace technology is "can the furnace run stably", that is, the anti-interference ability of the furnace. At present, there are three inconsistencies in the actual use of the crystal growth furnace: first, the inconsistency between different furnaces, which is more difficult in the process of use; second, the inconsistency of time, at this time can grow crystal, at that time No, no. Third, the operator's inconsistency, the worker can grow crystals, and the other people can't grow out. Skilled craftsmen have a long experience, and the current sapphire crystal furnace is still a new thing. Only a skilled operator can make the furnace work properly.

Although GT SOLAR is vigorously promoting its own crystal growth furnace in China, it is said that several companies have signed cooperation agreements with them, and we will wait and see how the actual use of the furnace will be. We hope that they can promote the maturity of China's sapphire growth technology and promote the development of the LED industry. However, most people in the industry still have doubts about the heat exchange method, and they are not very worried about how to avoid the defects such as crystal oxygen deficiency caused by a large amount of graphite and molybdenum in the furnace.

High-tech LED : At present, cost control has become the focus of the makers of crystal growth furnace equipment. What advantages does Jing Lande have in terms of cost?

Liu Shiquan : The key to the furnace is stability. At present, there is no need to strictly control the cost, but reducing costs is definitely the focus of the future.

Electricity is one of the main operating costs of the furnace, and power consumption is one of the indicators for assessing the economics of the furnace. In addition, the larger the crystal growth size of the furnace, the higher the crystal utilization rate and efficiency, and the lower the cost. The next step in the development of Jinglande will be the 200 kg crystal growth furnace.
