NVIDIA Next Generation Graphics Code "Ampere" 3 Moon Phases Next Year

[PConline Info] For several years, NVIDIA has named its GPU cores after renowned scientists like Fermi, Maxwell, Pascal, and Volta. But now, the next big name is finally coming into focus. The company's upcoming graphics architecture is called "Ampere."

It's no surprise that Ampere will be built on a 10nm process, setting it apart from Pascal’s 14nm/16nm and Volta’s 12nm (which was based on TSMC's 16nm process). In addition, HBM3 memory is expected to become standard on high-end models, offering even greater bandwidth and performance.

Ampere is set to debut at the GTC 2018 conference on March 26 next year. This timeline suggests that the release of Volta-based gaming GPUs could happen sooner than expected—possibly as early as CES 2018.

One of the reasons Volta took so long to launch was because NVIDIA was waiting for GDDR6 memory to become available. However, major manufacturers like Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron have all confirmed that GDDR6 is now ready for mass production, clearing the final hurdle.

With the new architecture, Ampere is expected to bring significant improvements in ray tracing, AI computing, and overall performance, making it a strong contender for both professional and gaming markets. As we get closer to the GTC event, more details about Ampere are likely to emerge, giving us a clearer picture of what to expect from NVIDIA’s next-generation GPUs.
