On November 23rd, OSRAM will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for its new plant in Kulim, Malaysia. This state-of-the-art facility is set to become the world's largest and most advanced production base for 6-inch wafer LED chips. With the global LED lighting market projected to grow by up to 7% annually by 2020, OSRAM is strategically expanding its presence with new manufacturing facilities around the globe.
The Kulim plant, covering 100,000 square meters (48 acres), will create over 1,500 job opportunities in Malaysia. To put that number into perspective, it’s equivalent to the full passenger capacity of two Airbus A380s. The location is strategically chosen, situated near the Penang factory and close to the airport and major highways, ensuring excellent access to infrastructure and skilled labor.
“OSRAM’s new facility in Malaysia will ensure we remain at the forefront of the LED market,†said Dr. Olaf Berlien, Chairman and CEO of OSRAM. The plant is expected to be fully operational soon, with an official opening ceremony planned for November 23rd.
In addition to the Kulim project, OSRAM has also made significant investments in other regions. For instance, the company recently announced the construction of its first factory in Bulgaria, investing 25.6 million euros (approximately 199 million yuan). Located near Plovdiv, the second-largest city in Bulgaria, this facility is scheduled to open on October 19th and is expected to generate more than 900 new jobs.
