OSRAM's new plant in Kulim, Malaysia, is set to open on November 23rd. This state-of-the-art facility will be the world’s largest and most advanced 6-inch wafer LED chip production base. With the global LED lighting market expected to grow by up to 7% annually by 2020, OSRAM is expanding its presence through strategic investments in new manufacturing sites.
The Kulim factory spans 100,000 square meters (48 acres) and is designed to create over 1,500 jobs for local workers—equivalent to the passenger capacity of two Airbus A380s. Located near the Penang factory and close to major transportation routes, the site offers excellent access to skilled labor and infrastructure, ensuring optimal production conditions.
"The new facility in Malaysia will ensure that OSRAM remains at the forefront of the LED market," said Dr. Olaf Berlien, Chairman and CEO of OSRAM. The plant is not only a significant milestone for the company but also a major contribution to Malaysia's industrial development.
In addition to the Kulim plant, OSRAM recently announced the opening of its first factory in Bulgaria. The facility, located near Plovdiv, was funded with an investment of 25.6 million euros (approximately 199 million yuan) and is scheduled to officially open on October 19. It is expected to generate more than 900 new jobs in the region.
With these expansions, OSRAM continues to strengthen its global footprint and support the growing demand for energy-efficient lighting solutions. As the company moves forward, it remains committed to innovation, sustainability, and creating value for both its stakeholders and the communities it operates in.
