US Department of Energy releases solid-state lighting (SSL) manufacturing R&D roadmap

On September 24, 2009, the US Department of Energy (DOE) recently released a product roadmap for solid-state lighting (SSL) manufacturing research and development, which was the result of discussions after DOE held two symposiums in 2009. This roadmap reflects the industry's latest views and shared expectations for SSL manufacturing, best practices and timing.

This blueprint is an effective complement to DOE's earlier multi-year SSL R&D program and will provide guidance on the SSL plan and the future manufacturing of new SSL products. This new program has two main objectives: to improve product consistency and quality, and to reduce costs by improving manufacturing processes. The third goal is to encourage domestic manufacturers to localize SSL products. In addition, this blueprint program is also intended to act as a mentor to equipment and materials suppliers, helping them reduce risk and ultimately reduce the cost of SSL manufacturing.

The roadmap will also be reviewed by DOEs and industry partners, with appropriate adjustments and updates based on project progress and priorities.
