Advanced control/communication technology in place to bring smart lighting applications to shine

Smart LighTIng can be regarded as an extension of the Smart Grid and plays an important role in the development of the intelligent energy management industry and smart home.

Compared with traditional lighting solutions, the biggest difference between intelligent lighting is the introduction of light-emitting diodes (LED), communication, automation control and environmental sensing functions. Therefore, the new lighting system design also adds a lot of technical challenges, how to be compatible with the tradition. Under the premise of lamps and lanterns, the development of intelligent lighting has gradually become the primary direction of supply chain operators.

NEMA/IEC push luminaire standard intelligent lighting era is accelerating

With this in mind, the National Association of Electrical Manufacturers (NEMA) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) have successively invested in the development of a new generation of intelligent lighting system standards, and is expected to expose technical architecture and functional safety in 2014. Such standard prototypes will accelerate the formation of intelligent lighting applications with communication and automatic control functions, attracting new business opportunities for the lighting industry and communication supply chain.

Liu Yaowen (Fig. 1), project manager of UL Taiwan Engineering Department, said that the development trend of intelligent lighting is inevitable, and major international standards organizations are actively discussing the relevant specifications of intelligent lighting systems. Among them, the NEMA Association in North America is the fastest growing. The core member of the association, UL, has planned to propose before the end of this year and drafted the standard for intelligent lighting in 2014.

In addition to the lighting system, the standard will also be incorporated into the intelligent lighting control software, connection interface and functional safety considerations to establish a common platform for intelligent lighting, accelerate the expansion of the market scale, and also avoid consumers to fully replace the intelligent lighting system. The cost is high.

Liu Yaowen emphasized that the NEMA standard has always played a role as a gatekeeper for lighting products entering the North American market, and countries such as Europe and Japan have used this as the basis for the country's standards, which shows that its influence cannot be underestimated. At this stage, the association is widely involved in the study of buildings, public facilities, street lamps/traffic signs and family intelligent lighting fixtures and interoperability mechanisms, which will become an important promoter of the lighting and ICT industry.

In addition to NEMA, the IEC has recently established the TC34 Subcommittee to intensify the development of a new generation of luminaire system standards. Although the team is still in the initial stage of defining intelligent lighting systems, peripheral application technologies including test verification methods, application coverage, and even energy harvesting (Energy HarvesTIng) have been included in the group meeting schedule, and it is expected in the next few years. To become a global reference source for intelligent lighting standards, it will be of great help to commercialize related solutions.

Liu Yaowen believes that as the two international standards organizations begin to outline the vision of smart lighting, including international lighting manufacturers, LED light sources, packaging and driver circuit solutions providers, and communication chip manufacturers have been competing to increase investment, will make the entire intelligent lighting The industrial chain is alive and promotes the continuous renovation of lighting technology.

Smart lighting ready to go LED driver / package tanned leather

In keeping with the traditional lighting system luminaire architecture, the LED driver and packaging technology revolution for smart lighting has been pioneered. Due to the limited design space of intelligent lighting system boards, LED driver and packagers have accelerated the development of integrated opto-integration solutions for driver circuits and LED light sources, as well as new packaging technologies such as DOB (Driver on Board) and COB (Chip on Board). .

NPD DisplaySearch analyst Yan Qingwei (Figure 2) said that North America, Japan and China are fully promoting energy-saving policies, and encouraging people and enterprises to replace LED lamps with subsidies, giving LED lighting a new kinetic energy and accelerating the entire industry. Development steps. As the price of LED products approaches the traditional lighting scheme, the penetration rate is increasing day by day, and the more forward-looking concept of intelligent lighting has emerged. It has attracted lighting solutions suppliers such as Philips, OSRAM, Toshiba and Rambus. Launch a new product offensive.

However, in addition to the need to increase communication, sensing and intelligent automatic control functions, LED intelligent lighting is more important to be compatible with traditional lamps to avoid large changes in lighting systems and affect consumers' willingness to adopt, while reducing overall installation costs. . Yan Qingwei stressed that under the limitation of the size of the lighting system, LED driver chip manufacturers and packagers have regarded the opto-integrated LED design with integrated drive circuit and light source as the layout focus, and developed new LED driver ICs, as well as DOB and COB. Such as miniaturized packaging solutions.

According to the analysis of Philips' latest intelligent lighting solution, Hue, the integrated lighting design, combined with ZigBee, LED lights and mobile device applications, provides dimming and wireless network control. Spreading the list of the material list (BOM) of the hue, the LED light source and the heat dissipation mechanism of the non-drive circuit only account for about 15%, and the drive circuit of the integrated communication and control scheme is as high as 75%, which shows that the drive circuit design will promote the development of intelligent lighting. The center of gravity.

It is reported that Texas Instruments (TI), Fairchild and Dialog Semiconductor are all committed to developing LED driver ICs with low power consumption, small size and higher functional integration, and will be equipped with ZigBee and low power. Related control technologies such as Bluetooth (BLE) or Digital Addressable Interface (DALI).

As for the LED packaging factory, it will increase the DOB and COB production lines of high-power LEDs to directly integrate LED driver ICs, printed circuit boards and lamps to help system operators realize the photoelectric integrated architecture and meet the requirements of intelligent lighting systems.

Intelligent lighting not only affects the LED driver architecture transformation, but also promotes new circuit layout and dimming technology to achieve a more convenient and lower cost digital control solution.
