Broadcom CTO: Six directions for future Ethernet development

1. Ethernet is used in the automotive field

Broadcom's involvement in automotive electronics is relatively late, but it established an OPEN alliance with Broadcom Silicon to promote 100Mbps Ethernet interconnection as an automotive network application standard, while promoting Broadcom BroadR-Reach Ethernet solutions in the next generation of automotive networks. Large-scale application.

Henry said that we will see this transition in the widespread use of Ethernet in the automotive sector. As we know, Ethernet is always the winner in any market.

This year BMW will adopt this technology in some models of cars. The initial results are better than expected, and it will become a substantive standard for the automotive industry in more than five years.

2. Competitor MOST

MOST (Media Oriented Systems Transport) was established in 1998. It has long been focused on the automotive market and is a network standard that is becoming more and more respected among automobile manufacturers and suppliers. It provides a single interface that can manage all multimedia devices. Its strength is that it can handle multiple data streams for different targets without losing harmony. In recent years, the data transmission has also been increased to 150Mbits / s

MOST currently has many supporters, but Ethernet will eventually be the winner. It has a huge customer base and ecosystem to keep costs down.

3. Silicon Photonics Technology

Silicon photonics technology has received a lot of attention, especially in data center applications. Recently, Intel has released 100G technology, and Mellanox has also started plans to acquire Kotura.

Henry said, "Silicon photonics is a very important technology for centralized data transmission in network switching. Broadcom's Trident 2 conversion chip has reached 1.28 terabits / s real-time data transmission, but the higher power consumption is limited. It is a factor that continues to expand, so the development of silicon photonics is inevitable.

Samueli did not disclose how and when to invest in silicon photonics technology, but he said that the company has multiple projects to use the latest 25 Gbit / s parallel converter for the development and research of 50 and 100g serial links. The next generation of 400G Ethernet is now defined as IEEE, and the 25G parallel converter will become an important building block.
