Geosynthetics direct shearing instrument: correct usage method
Geosynthetics direct shearing instruments are advanced testing devices developed by Tianjin Wan Testing Equipment Technology Co., Ltd. to measure the shear strength of geosynthetic materials. Using this equipment properly is essential for accurate results and safe operation. Here’s a detailed guide on how to use it correctly.
Step-by-step Guide to Using the Geosynthetics Direct Shear Instrument:
- Prepare the Sample: Place the sample flat on a rigid horizontal base located in the lower portion of the shear box, with the front end clamped within the shear zone. Bond the sample to the base using glue. Ensure the specimen is smooth, without folds or wrinkles. There must be no relative slippage between the sample and the base during the test.
- Install the Cutting Box: Fill the upper shear box with standard sand of pre-determined quality. The thickness of the sand should be uniform and approximately 50 mm. After compaction, the dry density should be around 1750 kg/m³.
- Apply Normal Pressure: Install the horizontal loader and apply a normal pressure of 50 kPa to the sample. This ensures proper contact and stability during the shear process.
- Apply Horizontal Load: Apply a horizontal load at a rate of 1 mm/min ± 0.2 mm/min. Measure the corresponding shear force (T) and relative displacement (ΔL). Record data every 12 seconds until the cut surface reaches 16.5% of the total length. At that point, the test will automatically stop.
- Use the LCD Interface:
- 1) Turn on the power switch.
- 2) Press the function key to start a new test.
- 3) Enter the required test speed and press Enter.
- 4) The screen will display “shear force,†“shear stress,†“peak,†and “displacement.â€
- 5) Press the start button to begin the test. The machine will first apply a normal stress of 50 kPa, then automatically proceed to 100 kPa, 150 kPa, and 200 kPa.
- 6) Once the displacement begins and the total contact surface is reached, the machine will stop automatically and display the test data. Confirm the result if everything is correct.
After each work shift, clean the countertop thoroughly and perform routine maintenance on the machine to ensure it is ready for the next use. Proper care and regular checks can significantly extend the lifespan of the equipment and maintain its accuracy over time.
