It's essential to use it properly to ensure accurate and reliable results. In this article, we will walk you through the correct way to use the equipment.


Proper usage of the geosynthetics direct shear instrument:

1. Place the sample flat on a rigid horizontal base located at the bottom part of the shear box. Secure the front end of the sample in the shear zone using glue. After bonding, make sure the specimen is smooth, without any folds or wrinkles. There must be no relative movement between the sample and the base during testing.

2. Install the cutting box: fill the upper shear box with standard sand of pre-determined quality (note: the user should handle the standard sand). Fill the sand to a thickness of 50mm, ensuring uniformity. The dry density after compaction should be 1750 kg/m³.

3. Install the horizontal loader and apply a normal pressure of 50 kPa to the sample.

4. Apply a horizontal load so that the rate of movement between the upper and lower shear boxes is 1 mm/min ± 0.2 mm/min. Record the corresponding displacement continuously or indirectly. Measure the shear force (T) and the relative displacement (ΔL) at intervals of 12 seconds. This process continues until the cut surface reaches 16.5% of its length, at which point the test ends.

5. LCD operation steps:

1) Turn on the power switch.

2) Press the function key to start a new test.

3) Enter the required test speed and press Enter.

Screen display includes: "shear force", "shear stress", "peak", and "displacement".

4) Press the start button to begin the test (incremental stress, first test normal stress of 50 kPa). If the result is valid, the system automatically proceeds to the next level: 100 kPa, 150 kPa, and 200 kPa.

5) The displacement starts to count, and once the total contact surface reaches 16.5%, the machine stops automatically. The test data is displayed on the screen. If everything is correct, press the confirm button.

At the end of each work shift, clean the countertops thoroughly and perform routine maintenance on the equipment for the next operation. Proper care ensures long-term accuracy and performance of the geosynthetics direct shearing instrument.
