GPRS remote power generation monitoring and data acquisition (SCADA) system

Project Introduction

The establishment of a smart grid can often overcome the challenges of maintaining and monitoring a remote generator substation. A remote monitoring and data acquisition (SCADA) system needs to rely on wireless technologies, such as cellular, microwave, or satellite, each of which has its own unique challenges. For example, cellular technology usually involves solving issues such as private IP, polling timeouts, regional data maintenance intervals (heartbeat intervals), protocol interoperability, and other network issues. Deploying a wireless communication system on the remote generator end is time-consuming and even fraught with the danger of ruining the entire project. We need a solution that is simple enough to both reduce labor and cost requirements and integrate seamlessly with SCADA or monitoring software.

Moxa solutions

ioLogik W5340 is a GSM / GPRS embedded solution equipped with intuitive IF-THEN-ELSE Click & Go â„¢ control logic. It requires no programming knowledge to set advanced features such as instant email or SMS alarms, just a few clicks in the easy-to-use menu interface. Compared with solutions that require complex AT commands or programming, the ioLogik series saves more than 90% time to market. ioLogik W5340 also comes with a patented PUSH-based AcTIve OPC Server, which collects data in real time via a GPRS network, avoiding the time-out phenomenon that often occurs in traditional polling architectures.

A remote generator monitoring system needs to monitor a series of digital and analog equipment. The alarm system involved uses both binary measurements, such as generator status, manual mode, general alarm, intrusion alarm, charger failure, and analog measurements, such as measuring fuel level or engine temperature. ioLogik W5340 is equipped with 4 analog inputs and 8 configurable DIO, which can accommodate these different types of devices. W5340 has two 5A 30VDC and 240 VAC, relays that can be used to remotely control the power line, and expandable local 1GB SD card memory. Through these functional features, W5340 can immediately and reliably send system alarms for managers, and at the same time save the historical data of system operation in the local data log.
