Is the era of IPv6 really here?

IPv4 and IPv6 will be in a state of coexistence for a long period of time. Under the current circumstances, the safest way is to start at the national level in terms of organization, technical standards, funds and policies.

A few days ago, the official website of the International Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) published a message entitled "The last batch of IPv4 addresses were allocated today", saying that "the Internet has reached a historic node", "the last remaining IPv4 addresses Allocated from the central pool ".

In the past few years, people continue to hear statements such as "IPv4 depletion" and "IPv6" have arrived, but there is always the suspicion of "thunder and little rain". Is the "IPv6 era" really coming?

What exactly is an IP address? For example, every computer on the Internet must have an accurate and recognizable "number", that is, an IP address, to connect to the entire network and use massive amounts of information. It's like a person must have his own ID number in order to be included in the orderly management of the community. These "ID numbers" are compiled in accordance with a specific "Internet Protocol" (IP). The so-called IPv4 is the fourth edition of the Internet Protocol. In this version of the protocol, each IP address is represented by a 32-bit number.

The IP address uses binary numbers, and the total number of addresses that can be expressed is 232, about 4 billion. In recent years, with the rapid development of the network, a large number of terminals need more and more IP addresses, and it is inevitable that the "ID number" will be used up.

As a result, the newly added computer cannot apply for its "ID card number". For the Internet, the most direct solution is naturally to expand the number of digits of the IP address. This is the sixth edition of the Internet Protocol that people often refer to-IPv6, which has a length of 128 bits and the total number of IP addresses It will be 2128.

However, in the eyes of experts, the day of complete exhaustion has not yet arrived. It's as if the last few boxes of goods have left the general warehouse and shipped to a regional store or distribution center, but continue to be distributed to everyone. There are more or less remaining IP in the five major regions of the world. Once the IP addresses of these regional "warehouses" are fully allocated, it will mean a real "depletion of supply."

How long will this regional distribution process last? How far is the "IPv6" era from us?

"The exhaustion time varies from several months to several years, and there will be no major problems during the year. But given the complexity of IPv6 implementation, there is not much time left." Li Xiaodong, chief engineer of China Internet Network Information Center, said.

Li Xiaodong admitted that the complexity of IPv6 implementation involves many aspects, but "technology" is not the main difficulty. Chen Hongjie, an associate professor at the School of Information Science and Technology at Peking University, pointed out: "The current bottleneck in the development of IPv6 is the application layer, such as database systems and Web services."

So, for the coming "IPv6 era", is China's Internet industry fully prepared?

Chen Hongjie said: "Now the IPv6 backbone network has also been built very large, but the current actual traffic in this network is very small."

According to Professor Li Xing, deputy director of the Information Network Engineering Research Center of Tsinghua University, at present, the international application of IPv6 addresses in China lags seriously, with only 1/148 of the United States, and applications for IPv6 resources are mainly concentrated in the Beijing area.

Why has shouted “Wolves are coming” for many years, and the development of IPv6 is still so “limited”? Chen Hongjie believes that on the one hand, there are many remaining IPv4 addresses in the hands of domestic telecom operators, and the pressure of IP addresses is not felt in actual use. Therefore, they are not in a hurry; on the other hand, the IT field has different voices on whether the next generation Internet should adopt IPv6 technology. In her view, IPv4 and IPv6 will coexist for a long period of time. Under the current circumstances, the safest way is to start from the national level, in terms of organization, technical standards, funds and policies. overall arrangement. Such as address application, setting software system network access standards, etc.
