There is a type of circuit breaker known as an earth leakage circuit breaker, commonly referred to as a residual current device (RCD). In simple terms, this device detects imbalances between the current flowing through the live wire and the neutral wire. If the current in the live wire is not equal to that in the neutral wire, it indicates a leakage or fault. This means that some of the current is escaping through an unintended path, such as through a person or faulty wiring. In such cases, it's important to stay away from the system and prioritize personal safety.
Leakage switch tripping can occur in three main situations: leakage trip, overload trip, and short-circuit trip. If the leakage switch is damaged and trips, the power supply will be cut off if it was on, and the load will also be disconnected regardless of whether there is power present or not.
An overload trip typically occurs when the connected devices draw more current than the circuit can handle. After an overload trip, the circuit breaker may feel hot to the touch, but once it cools down, it can usually be reset. However, it’s important to address the root cause of the overload to prevent repeated trips.
When dealing with leakage trips, one common method is to isolate the problem by unplugging all devices and then reconnecting them one by one. Start by turning off the leakage circuit breaker, then use a step-by-step approach to identify which appliance or socket is causing the issue. If the circuit breaker trips again after re-adding a specific device, you’ve found the source of the problem.
However, some issues are more complex. For example, a leaking air conditioner compressor might only trip when it's running, making it harder to diagnose without specialized tools. Another challenging scenario is street lights that trip during rainy weather due to moisture affecting the lamp heads. These types of problems often require professional inspection and repair. Always ensure proper safety measures are taken when dealing with electrical systems, and consider consulting a qualified electrician for complex or recurring issues.
