Is it safe to release the Type-C data cable in the new standard?

A few days ago, Google engineer Benson Leung tested the USB type-c data cable on the market. The sample size is very small, only 10; the amount of information is very large, of which only 3 can connect to the Chromebook Pixel, and the other directly burns the USB type-c port of the Chromebook Pixel.

According to analysis, the reason for this situation is actually very low: On this A-to-C data line, Surjtech connects the GND of the Type A plug to the VBUS of the Type C plug, and connects the VBUS pin of the Type A plug. The GND of the C-type plug is reached, causing the interface to be short-circuited. Since this kind of event is not a case, Amazon has begun to remove all non-compliant type-c data lines and adapters.

As we all know, type-c is one of the USB 3.1 connection interfaces announced in April 2014 for the USB Developer Forum (USB-IF), which is responsible for the USB interface specification. Since it solved the world problem of "USB is never inserted", it was seen by many people as the beginning of the interface revolution. But until two years later, the Type-C certification specification was late.

Is it safe to release the Type-C data cable in the new standard?

USB-IF has released a USB Type-C certification scheme. In fact, this is followed by Apple's lightning data line, and another data line equipped with a "handshake protocol." Therefore, this solution can guarantee the security of the device through the protocol, and the data transmission or charging will only be carried out under the premise of all normal conditions.

It is understood that the USB Type-C certification scheme has the following main points:

Authentication protocol for USB Type-C chargers, devices, cables and power supplies;

Support USB data bus or USB Power Delivery channel authentication;

Equipment using an authentication scheme will gain control of the equipment that implements or enforces the security policy;

128bit security that relies on any encryption method;

Currently available in the international standard for authentication formats, digital signals, hashes, and randomly generated encryption methods.

On the surface, this certification scheme does not impose new requirements on the hardware specifications of Type-C. Therefore, manufacturers only need to obtain a production license through firmware upgrade. But things are not that simple, at least split in two.

On the one hand, although the certification scheme has only recently been released, the specifications for production have long existed. So if the manufacturers only strictly follow the specifications, Surjtech's case of burning the device port is impossible.

In addition, according to industry veterans, "Because the previous Type-C does not require certification, a mobile phone manufacturer in China has exported a USB 2.0 to Type-C data line in order to save costs. This line is theoretically only allowed. Passing 500 mah of current, so it has a control resistor inside. As a result, it uses a large current resistor, and finally a problem."

"In fact, whether it is A to C, C to C, or other Type-C data lines, they are standard. The Type-C specification clearly defines how vendors should do it. What kind of resistance should be used for identification, etc. However, without certification, many companies have no incentive to do testing, and there are cases when cutting corners."

On the other hand, according to the Lei Feng network reporter, through this certification program, USB-IF actually added an encrypted communication chip into it. "Like Apple's lightning, if you want to charge Apple's devices, you must have an Apple certified chip. It's equivalent to closing your system."

What is the practical significance of doing this? Industry insiders told Lei Feng.com (search for “Lei Feng Network” public number concern) Reporter: “There are many lightning data lines on the market, and the specifications are different. If you have MFI (Make For iPhone), every interface of Apple will be collected. 2.3 US dollars to 4 US dollars. And the domestic cottage manufacturers can achieve a minimum of 5 cents."

Therefore, "it is not difficult to explain, after MFI's lightning data line has to sell tens of dollars, but not a few dollars for MFI." In the global market, USB-IF can guarantee the formality. The security of the data line, "but in the face of such high profits, basically everything can be used to crack."
