On the morning of April 2nd, Tencent's autonomous vehicles made their debut in Beijing's Fourth Ring Road, marking the first public appearance of the Tencent Autopilot Prototype. The vehicle, a white Changan SUV, was modified for testing purposes and featured a prominent laser radar on its roof, making it instantly recognizable. Additional sensors were installed at the rear, while cameras and millimeter-wave radars were strategically placed around the front and back of the car.

The design suggests that Tencent is taking a multi-sensor approach to its driverless technology, combining laser radar with visual and radar systems. This redundancy is seen as a secure and effective strategy in the current industry landscape.
At the 2017 Global Partner Conference, Tencent had already outlined its vision for autonomous vehicles, emphasizing both "advanced driving assistance" and full autonomy—essentially walking on two legs. Today’s prototype seems to align with the latter part of that plan.
In recent years, China's tech giants have been actively investing in autonomous driving. Baidu launched its driverless project in 2014 and has since partnered with Jinlong Automotive to develop an autonomous minibus. Alibaba, along with SAIC, established a joint venture focused on intelligent automotive systems. Meanwhile, Tencent has taken a more strategic investment approach, holding a 5% stake in Tesla and collaborating with Baidu and other institutions to support companies like NIO. Reports also suggest that Tencent is developing its own autonomous driving system from the ground up.
This latest unveiling indicates that Tencent is moving beyond just investment and into active development, positioning itself as a serious player in the future of mobility.
