Automotive infotainment forms mainstream: highly integrated solutions provide value-added functions

This application note explains how Maxim ’s comprehensive high-performance IC product line simplifies the design of OEM manufacturers ’infotainment systems to meet the current automotive environment ’s demands for consumer products and product reliability.

introduction

Automobile users' requirements for infotainment platforms are gradually increasing, and they need to integrate security functions (such as navigation and communication services) and a wide range of consumer electronics functions. In the past, these functions were often high-profit, luxury devices that could not be popularized as in-vehicles. At present, even in low-end models, consumers are increasingly demanding such functions.

Auto OEM manufacturers need to carefully determine the appropriate architecture to provide these services at reasonable cost and quality. As hardware and software development costs continue to increase, meeting consumer demand for performance and functionality also faces greater challenges. OEM manufacturers must expand cost-effective solutions so that they can flexibly migrate from low-end cars to high-end luxury cars, so that the development cost can meet the requirements of various platforms and models.

Get the most value from new features

Maxim's comprehensive high-performance integrated circuit product line allows OEM manufacturers to easily build infotainment systems to meet the current automotive environment's demand for consumer products and their reliability. Maxim uses its proprietary process and design technology to provide highly integrated solutions that effectively reduce the number of components and save space, and ultimately achieve the purpose of simplifying design.

For video transmission, Maxim's LVDS transceiver solution can greatly reduce costs while providing strict ESD protection, DC balance, and excellent EMI indicators. The MAX9257 / MAX9258 bidirectional serializer / deserializer (SerDes) chipset does not require a CAN or LIN interface in automotive video applications. The chipset can use lower-cost cables and connectors to form a complete digital video link through a pair of differential wires or twisted pairs. The chipset converts 18-bit parallel data into a high-speed serial data stream.

Rear seat entertainment systems can also benefit from Maxim's highly integrated solutions, such as the MAX7461 single-channel loss of synchronization (LOS) detector. The device provides composite video synchronization detection, suitable for standard definition television (SDTV) systems of NTSC, PAL and SECAM. The MAX7461 uses advanced detection circuits to provide powerful functions that can prevent false synchronization loss alarms caused by noise, eliminating the need for microcontrollers in traditional synchronization loss monitoring systems.

The MAX2170 / MAX2171 low-IF direct conversion tuner allows designers to use one tuner to support digital broadcast (DAB), mobile TV (T-DMB), and FM signals simultaneously. The tuner has higher component integration, which facilitates low power consumption and on-board tuner design. In addition, they are compatible with most mainstream RF standards around the world, making them easy to reuse and promote worldwide.

Infotainment system requires high reliability protection

An important consideration in automotive design is to ensure seamless operation of the infotainment system under cold start, load dump, and start / stop conditions. In order to meet the requirements of these harsh conditions, many Maxim automotive ICs integrate reliable protection functions, which makes the design simpler and ensures reliable operation.

The MAX15004 / MAX15005 power controller integrates output overvoltage protection to avoid damage to the vacuum fluorescent display (VFD). The controller can ensure normal operation in the range of vehicle input voltage from 4.5V to 40V (load dump). If VCC is provided by an external bias circuit, it can support an input voltage that drops to 2.5V. These controllers integrate all the necessary components to achieve a fixed frequency isolated / non-isolated power supply.

For backlit LCD applications, the MAX16826 high-brightness (HB) LED driver provides designers with an extremely rugged and flexible solution. The device can withstand transient voltages up to 40V under load dump and can still work normally during cold start. In addition, it has an I²C interface to reduce system implementation costs and increase flexibility. The I²C interface allows dynamic programming of the output voltage of the switching regulator and the LED current amplitude of each channel. This capability greatly improves the power efficiency of the LED driver circuit and allows system manufacturers to adjust the LED brightness.

Uninterrupted power supply

As the demand for uninterrupted working systems (such as anti-theft systems, remote control access control receivers and tire pressure monitoring systems) increases, designers must continue to reduce static current consumption.

The MAX15006 / MAX15007 low-dropout linear regulators are ideal for uninterrupted operating systems. These devices can operate from 4V to 40V input voltage, provide up to 50mA output current, and consume only 10µA quiescent current under no-load conditions. Even at full load, the quiescent current can be maintained at 90µA (typical) through the internal p-channel pass transistor. In shutdown mode, the MAX15007 consumes only 3µA.
