IMEC promotes the process of software-defined radio technology, developers demonstrate high-speed universal platform for the first time

IMEC announced a chip that can handle a series of advanced forward error correction technologies for various WANs and LANs. The European R & D team intends to launch a complete set of chips for software-defined wireless technology, which is one of them.

The developers verified the SDR baseband and analog front-end chips separately. During the demonstration, the transmission speed of the video signal in two identical 2.4 GHz channels was close to 100 Mbits / sec. They said that this transmission speed is 5 times the transmission speed that they can support before.

IMEC's FlexFEC chip can handle advanced turbo and LDPC forward error correction codes. FEC technology is used in a series of wireless networks, including third- and fourth-generation cellular standards (such as 3GPP and LTE), wireless networks (such as 802.11n and mobile WiMax (802.16e)), and broadcast television standards (such as European DVB -S2 / T2).

IMEC said that the FlexFEC chip is a multi-processor with SIMD architecture, which is very competitive in output and power consumption compared with the existing FEC chip. Liesbet Van der Perre, director of the IMEC wireless research group and a professor at the Catholic University of America, said, "FlexFEC can be used as a general-purpose module for building various types of chips."

The group led by Van der Perre is about to launch a second-generation analog front end for SDR technology. The Scaldio-2 chip using the 45nm process can transmit SDR signals, and the frequency coverage ranges from 200 MHz to 6 GHz (even possibly up to 10 GHz).

The team also designed a chip called "Bear chip" for processing baseband signals in SDR. Papers on these two chips were presented to the International Solid State Circuit Conference in February.

IMEC first demonstrated a solution using Scaldio and two Bear chips to transmit SDR signals at 216 Mbits / s in August. At the annual press conference, Van der Perre and two colleagues demonstrated a solution that uses a single Bear baseband chip to process two channels of the same video stream signal and then transmits it through a 2.4 GHz SDR link.
