Massive Application

Magnetic sensors are small, cost-effective, and easy to integrate into complex circuits, making them ideal for a wide array of applications. Their versatility has led to widespread use across industries—from automotive to medical and consumer electronics.

In robotics and factory automation, magnetic sensors shine due to their high precision and reliability. They enable accurate detection of position and speed, which is critical for motion control. This ensures robotic arms and other components move with both accuracy and fluidity, improving overall production quality and safety.

Beyond vehicles, these sensors are found in home appliances like washing machines and microwaves, where they detect whether doors are open or closed. In medical devices, they help hearing aids recognize when a phone is near, switching to a mode that enhances sound clarity. They’re also used in elevators for floor detection and in mobile devices to determine if they're on or off.

Working Principle

Magnetic sensors operate by converting magnetic fields into electrical signals—voltage or current. Since they don’t require physical contact with moving parts, they reduce wear and tear, lowering maintenance costs and environmental impact in industrial and automotive settings.

There are various types of magnetic sensors, but two commonly used ones are Hall effect sensors and fluxgate sensors. Both are highly integrated into circuits and offer unique advantages depending on the application.

Hall effect sensors are known for their reliability in diverse electromagnetic environments. They are widely used in fuel gauges to detect float levels in tanks and in brushless motors to track rotor position. Their integration into existing circuits doesn’t require special materials or processes, making them cost-effective and easy to implement.

Fluxgate sensors, on the other hand, are more sensitive and can detect minute changes in magnetic fields. They are commonly used in electronic compasses for ships and aircraft, as well as in geological instruments for underground mapping.

Texas Instruments offers a broad portfolio of solutions incorporating Hall effect and fluxgate technologies. These innovations are being integrated into advanced semiconductor processes to create new and exciting device capabilities.

"We are continuously developing a range of magnetic sensing technologies and embedding them into our semiconductor platforms to create innovative products," said Ross Eisenbeis, a system engineer at TI.
